Oregon Schools Should Invest in School Discipline Practices that Help Students Succeed, Not Policies that Push them Into Prison
Portland Oregon Youth, Parents, Community Members and Educators Take Part in National Week of Action to End School “Pushout”
Welcome to Portland Parent Union’s 8th Annual National Week of Action Against Schools Pushout! Our theme this year is Education is a Human Right! We Will Not Give Up the Fight! The Dignity in Schools Campaign’s National Week of Action brings together organizations and individuals from many states to call for an end to zero tolerance policies, for the implementation of positive approaches to discipline, like restorative justice practices and positive behavior supports instead of relying solely on suspensions and expulsions, and for the passage of federal legislation that promotes positive school climates. Dignity in Schools members and allies along with Portland Parent Union will hold local events across the country, and participate in our two-day National Week of Action Event in New Orleans on October 23-24.
DSC members and allies call on the federal government, states, districts, and schools to:
-
Shift funding from school police to counselors, peace builders, and positive discipline.
-
Fund and use transformative and restorative justice, mediation, and positive interventions.
-
Stop arresting and pushing out Black students and other students of color, LGBTQ youth, students that are homeless and students with disabilities at higher rates.
-
Make sure states and districts focus on school climate under the new federal law — the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
-
End paddling and physical punishment in all schools.
-
Invest in public education, not privatization and charter schools.
Portland Oregon – Parents, teachers, students and other members of Portland Parent Union will hold a reception, press conference to launch the week of action on Monday at 6PM 9:30 PM Oct. 23 at 1030 SW Jefferson Second Floor. Agenda/Map
I don’t know what a perfect education system looks like, and don’t think it even exists. But I believe that if we talk, try something different, fail forward, investigate and share what we do, not only locally but globally, we can get a lot closer.
